Mōrena, and happy Tuesday! It’s our last email for the year, so a short one today. We’re taking a break over the summer to rest our eyeballs from screens and to engage in a bit of forest-bathing, sun-bathing, and ocean-bathing.
☀️ Links for the summer
We’ve updated our Climate Club Starter Pack which is full of resources that might come in handy over the summer. Check it out and share with friends & whānau!
🐝 One 5-min action: don’t subsidise pollution!
350 Aotearoa, Common Grace Aotearoa, and CICTAR have co-published a sequel report on why our power bills are going up (the first one is here). A big factor is because big polluting corporations like Methanex are being given over $301 million in subsidies from our taxes over 10 years, while polluting 34% more in its NZ Taranaki plant than its overseas plants, and moving profits overseas to its parent company. Major gas users like Methanex are a big reason why the current government is not keen to move away from fossil fuels.
Action: Email the Minister for Climate Change to stop subsidising pollution
🗞️ Annual readers’ survey
Thanks to those of you who filled out our annual readers’ survey! It’s been great reading your feedback — we’ll be putting those into action in the new year. The survey is still open, so please feel free to respond if you’d like. Here’s a sample of the results so far.
For 90% of you, your participation in climate action has increased (whether a bit or a lot) since reading Climate Club.
Here are some climate-related things you've done in the last year that you're proud of:
“Signed various petitions, involvement with local sustainability group”
“Used the bus and e-bike more than ever for transport to appointments etc.’
“We removed gas supply - now solar and electric. Volunteer at a mara kai locally.”
“Worked with Free Fares NZ to save half-price fares for community service card holders”
“Organised & run workshop on the Emissions Reduction Plan”
“Attended school strike for climate”
“Presented to our council on a more climate focussed Long Term Plan.”
We’re thrilled to hear all the ways that you’ve been making climate action a part of your everyday.
Finally, a huge thanks to our paid subscribers and donors. As we look to make this a sustainable initiative that we can continue for years to come, your contributions have give us the confidence we need to grow and adapt.
🏖️ See you in 2025
We’ll be back on Tuesday 21st January with your first issue for 2025. Rest up, and let’s come back restored and ready to kick off this next quarter century. Signing off with this ol’ faithful quote by Margaret Mead:
