#169: What does Climate Club have in common with the Briscoes lady?
On changing minds one Woman’s Weekly at a time
Mōrena, and happy 1st of July!
My heart goes out to everyone hit by extreme flooding this weekend across the motu. I didn’t know the phrase “subtropical river of moisture” until this weekend…
Climate change isn’t a far-off issue anymore; it’s in our streets, our houses and our weekend chat groups. And as it hits closer to home, more and more people are stepping up to be part of the solution. It’s here. It’s everyone’s problem.
But that also means we can all be part of the solution. This shouldn’t be just a realm for policymakers or scientists. We need artists, tradies, aunties, comedians, neighbours to take a variety of new climate actions. Whoever you are and whatever your life experience, climate action is absolutely for you!
And it turns out Women’s Weekly agrees! Thanks to Michele A’Court, last week Climate Club made an appearance in those very pages, bringing climate action to a whole new type of audience.
If we want climate action to stick, it has to show up in everyday life - in lifestyle mags, in sports stadiums, and at the hairdresser. As one wise LinkedIn commenter said:
“We need to apply mainstream thinking and mainstream media to our strategies. We are in a bubble, we need to pop it and explode out, in all our passionate glory, into the everyday lives of Kiwis.” - Steph
What can we do today?
The most-clicked link last week was the waste incinerator petition!
🐝 5 minutes: Ban the bank ban, man
Due 9am this Wednesday: There’s a bill going through Parliament that 350 Aotearoa is calling the “you must bank with coal” bill. If it passes, banks will be barred from withdrawing services for any reasons other than commercial. Essentially: no taking into consideration climate concerns or other environmental or human rights concerns, and no ditching fossil fuel companies. 350 has put together a great explainer and submission guide, so let’s all push the Government not to support this bill.
Action: Copy paste from 350’s submission guide, or if you have a bit more time, write your own to oppose this bill
🐇 15 minutes: Bus-t a move
Waikato, 13th July: Your region’s bus service is being reviewed. Do you want fast, frequent buses? Tell your Council so that they can get you sorted.
Action: give 10 mins of feedback in the survey by 13 July
💃🏽 30+ minutes: Tree cheers for forests
Due 9am, 7th July: The NZ Government is passing a law preventing ‘productive farmland’ being planted with trees with the aim of protecting productive land for agricultural purposes. Although forestry isn’t the only climate solution, it’s certainly a lower emitter than high-methane-emitting farming. Here’s an article saying why it’s a bad idea.
Action: Write in opposing this new Bill limiting new forestry conversions using our submission guideDo you know someone under 30 who might want to take their climate activism to the next level?
Action: Apply or shouldertap them for the Climate Justice Squad Fellowship
Wins!
New Plymouth District Council voted against seabed mining (yay, let’s leave the ocean as a huge carbon sink!)
That’s all for today, folks 👋🏽 Thanks for taking action. Enjoy this highlight reel of the wonderful Former Miss NZ, Jess Tyson, taking action through the Climate Club Challenge.
See you next week,

Well done getting climate change mentioned. Absolutely nothing mentioning climate on all those recent reports of flooding and other weather events. See this morning’s Kākā from Bernard Hickey.
