Mōrena Climate Club whānau,
I know a lot of us will be feeling a deep sense of sadness this week as we settle into the new reality: our most right-wing government in recent history, the setback of indigenous rights in Australia and terror in Gaza. What happens to the most vulnerable in our society affects us all, and the current events at home and across the world are an injury to our society as a whole.
We at the Climate Club team want to thank all of you who voted in this election, and those of you who went one step further in voting for people and the planet than you have before. We see the impact of that in one of the best results so far for Te Pati Māori and the Greens ever seen. Results aside, it shows that there is a large portion of our society who want caring policies, who want to see urgent climate action, who want to support those who stand for moving away from business as usual.
Our mahi continues - now in the realm of more community mobilisation, more protesting, and more advocacy in the places we’re already in, such as our work and school. We’ve always said that the end goal of Climate Club is to help you all get involved with a community, and that stands now more than ever: it’s a way for us to both strengthen the climate movement, but also for you to feel supported. It doesn’t just have to be a climate community either - we know that other front-line organisations will all be needing our support in the coming years.
Let's rest up, recharge, and come back for the mahi of these three years 🧡
What can we do today?
The most-clicked link from last week’s issue was the petition to regulate fast fashion in New Zealand 💚
🐝 If you have 5 minutes: Oil have none of that
The new National-led Government has said they will bring back offshore oil and gas exploration to Aotearoa, which is a very silly idea.
Action: Add your name to Greenpeace’s new open letter telling oil and gas to stay away.
🐇 If you have 15 minutes: Rapid feedback on rapid transit
The Auckland Rapid Transport Study looked into best practices for transport facilities across Auckland, and are now looking for feedback on how people access and use our rapid transit stations, with a long-term goal to grow patronage, provide a better end-to-end customer journey, and support thriving communities around these stations.
Action: Have your say on the survey results to see whether it reflects what you’re seeing! (you don’t have to be in Auckland)
💃🏽 If you have 30 minutes or more: Tell Beehive to beehave on climate
Te Whanganui-a-Tara, TODAY 7:30am-9:30: Are you reading this on the way to work in Wellington? Join people on the ground to respond to the election and demand climate action: tax big corporations like power companies - and invest in climate solutions such as homegrown energy.
Action: Join the action at Parliament grounds (it’s a fun one!)
Curious about how the Emissions Trading Scheme drives climate action? The Emissions Trading Scheme is an important tool for meeting our emissions targets, but it can be a bit complex and unclear. Learn more about what’s going on and how it could help at our deep dive session.
Action: Register and find the Zoom link here for the deep dive on Thursday the 19th.
In case you missed it!
As we saw with the latest elections, every vote matters in shaping our society, and low turnout is a massive problem in Aotearoa (over 1 million people didn’t vote this election). The Electoral (Lowering Voting Age for Local Elections and Polls) Legislation Bill seeks to lower the voting age to 16 for local elections and polls, enabling our youth to have a say in the decisions that shape their communities and ultimately, their futures.
Action: Make a submission to ask for a lower voting age (it takes 5 mins!)
That’s all for today, folks 👋🏽 Thanks for taking action. Enjoy this clip of unbridled silliness.
See you next week,
Cathy & the Climate Club team

The action this morning at Parliament was a real bright spot - despite the stormy weather there was tonnes of energy. Here's a clip from 350 Aotearoa: https://fb.watch/nJxOraQGVy/
