Kia ora, and happy Tuesday!
It’s definitely starting to get a bit chillier, and what better time to snuggle up and get into some climate action? 🍂This week, we’re staying local and keeping our own whare tidy by pushing for our councils to acknowledge the climate emergency and to act accordingly on all fronts.
The most clicked link from last week’s issue was the call to ban new fossil fuel installations, which activists handed over to Parliament with over 19,000 signatures last Friday. The same group also created this “climate criminal” projection over the Fonterra building. Ka pai!
What can you do today?
🐝 If you have 5 minutes: Link up with locals
Local elections are coming up this October, but right now, you have a chance to “get vocal in your local”. We suggest choosing the “Sustainable” option at the “Choose your dream” question to show how important climate action is for us all, but it’s up to you - it’s your future!
Action: Take this fun, interactive 5-minute survey to show what matters to you most!Porirua and Wellington City Councils have already declared a climate emergency. This is a great chance for other councils to follow suit.
Action: Sign here to ask your local council to declare a climate emergency (you can actually sign all of them - the actions of all regions impact us!)Aotearoa responded to Covid with regular press conferences - an appropriate response for a global crisis. Yet we don’t have nearly as much transparency or information on our government’s response to the global climate crisis.
Action: Ask the government for climate press conferences now!
🐇 If you have 15 minutes: Counsel the councillors
Submissions on the Auckland Climate Action Targeted Rate were overwhelmingly positive (thanks to you all!), but some councillors are still on the fence. You don’t have to live in Auckland to make your voice heard - as our most populous city, changes to Auckland’s climate response will impact us all.
Action: Use this email template to ask your local councillor to support the CATR
💃🏽 If you have 30 minutes or more: Let’s park emissions from transport
Parking management might not sound like the most exciting of topics, but it can be a great tool to reduce emissions from transport. We know that reducing parking availability is a powerful lever to reduce driving, and therefore emissions. However, Auckland Council have not made reducing emissions a key priority in their draft Parking Strategy.
Action: Use Bike AKL’s handy submission guide to have your say
In case you missed it
Two days left to submit on the changes proposed to the Emissions Trading Scheme! Have your say on a key tool in Aotearoa’s climate policy using this handy guide.
The government is (finally!) considering setting up a “bottle buy-back” scheme around the country. Show your support using this one-click submission.

🌊🚫⛏Remember the petition we shared asking the government to ban seabed mining? The Tuvalu government has now announced it will no longer support deep sea mining, joining Fiji, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea! This is a great step shifting the tide against mining, and we hope the NZ government follows suit.
🌎✍️ In Issue #7, we shared the petition for a global treaty on plastics pollution. This was approved at the UN Environment Assembly!
That’s all for today, folks 👋🏽 Thanks for taking action. By the way, we’ve joined Instagram! Join us @climateclubnz - we’d love to stay in touch and it’s made our day to see you folks tag us in your actions.
See you next week,
Dhanya, Emily, and Jenny from the Climate Club
