Issue #2: On mining, clean air, and how we get around
Kia ora, and happy Tuesday!
The most clicked link from last week’s issue was the Right to Repair Campaign, which calls on the Ministry for the Environment to make it easier and cheaper for people to get items repaired in Aotearoa. Great mahi! 🔧
What can you do today?
🐝 If you have 5 minutes: Be a fan of plans and bans
New exploration, prospecting, and mining activities have recently been approved, even after Ardern announced there would be “no new mines on conservation land” four years ago. Add your name to an open letter calling for our conservation land to be kept mine-free.
Taking responsibility for our waste should mean being accountable for the waste we make within Aotearoa. We currently allow certain plastics to be shipped overseas because they are classified as “easily recyclable”, but this doesn’t guarantee that it gets recycled at the receiving country. Instead, it becomes a way for us to ship our emissions to developing countries.
Call on the government to immediately ban all plastic waste exports.
🐇 If you have 15 minutes: Make a plea to your local MP
Keep the momentum going on clean air in schools! Last week’s issue had a link to a petition calling for the government to fund a fast transition to 100% renewables for all schools. Take your action further and tell MPs about why fossil fuel boilers in schools are not acceptable - email them using this template.
💃🏽 If you have 30 minutes to 1 hour: We like to move it move it
Let’s get our capital moving sustainably! A coalition of government agencies and mana whenua partners Taranaki Whānui and Ngāti Toa have come up with four options for how we might transform the capital’s transport future. Submissions on these options are open until December 10th. Even though it’s about Wellington, this is an opportunity to create a precedent for similar changes in other cities - so all aboard, here’s the submission guide!
