Issue 22: No more status quo
On solving for both the cost of living and climate crises + upcoming climate events (like our new lightning talks!)
Kia ora, and happy Tuesday! It’s World Bike Day this Friday, so why not jump on your bike and go to a bike rave!
The rising cost of living is hot on everyone’s minds. At times like these, the fragility of our status quo - valuing economic growth over personal and environmental wellbeing - becomes clear. Societal and climate issues are one and the same. Solutions like divesting from fossil fuels, supporting local growers and efforts towards food sovereignty, or organising in your communities for community-owned energy projects will also improve wellbeing for all.
🎉 New team members
We have two newcomers to the Climate Club team! We thank these two awesome wāhine for offering their time and skills towards our goal of making climate action easier for all you wonderful folks :)
Megan Elizabeth is a communication coordinator and freelance business creative. She has joined us as our social media manager, managing our Instagram and Twitter accounts. We’ve already been blown away by her knowledge & talents 💪
Nina Ives is a climate change policy and ethics researcher (here’s an article she contributed to about the ERP). She’s coming onboard to launch a new thing we’re trying at climate club - lightning talks!
⚡️Lightning Talks!
On that note, on Wednesday 15 June (2 weeks from now) from 7pm - 7:30pm, we’re holding our first ever lightning talk session! We will be bringing in experts and activists to give 5/15/30 min talks about an area that they are working in. Join us on Zoom here!
What can you do today?
🐝 If you have 5 minutes: Sink about the carbon
Forest & Bird have a petition aiming to fund the restoration and protection of wetlands. Wetlands are fantastic carbon sinks, and yet only 10% of our wetlands remain.
Action: Sign the petition to restore and double the wetlands!
💃🏽 If you have 30 minutes or more: How do activists make an event? They planet
There’s a global event for World Environment Day from tomorrow to June 5th in Stockholm. Their sessions are educational and super interesting!
Action: Attend an online sessionThis Thursday, climate & degrowth coalition Wise Response are running a workshop on how we plan for the limits of economic growth. It’s hosted by a Labour MP, so it’s great to see politicians considering this!
Action: Attend the online workshop
In case you missed it!
The Auckland Climate Action Targeted Rate has had huge support from around Aotearoa, but some councillors are still on the fence. Decisions are being made in June, so use this email template to ask your local councillor to support the CATR!
In Issue 19, we shared a national postcard campaign to urge all political parties to support the ERP. This was covered by RNZ and shared by the Green Party! If you’re feeling up for a bit of arts & crafts during all this wet weather, consider writing a postcard using this guide.
That’s all for today, folks 👋🏽 Thanks for taking action. Enjoy this fun “can I recycle this?” game from WasteMINZ!
See you next week,
Dhanya, Emily, and Jenny from the Climate Club
