Great focus. I wonder if you could include in a future message, advocating for TEQs, tradable energy quotas. The ETS does not work as it is a price based system. If we were to move to TEQs, with free equal allocations to every citizen, which declined annually according to the agreed budget, everyone would be creative on ways to shift to a low carbon lifestyle. Please get back to me at brucepaul39@gmail.com, or check out www.degrowth.nz for a link to our petition. We also have a community petition at Greenpeace linked to the one set up with the parliamentary petition site. Nga mihi Paul Bruce

Hey Paul! Great to hear from you. We're big fans of DGNZ's work and we've shared the petition for TEQs in February here: https://climateclubnz.substack.com/p/climate-club-56-the-end-of-climate

Is this a new petition?

Well done team; of the climate-related emails in my inbox every week, yours are among the most relevant. 350 Christchurch are about to fundraise for a letterbox drop asking voters to weigh up the various party climate policies and vote for their kids' future. Too many people still don't seem to understand the scale and urgency of the climate crisis and the fact that we need to put or kids' future above everything else. That includes accepting a range of actions some of which will hurt. We desperately need a climate-aware and climate-active government backed by science literate, considerate voters.

Thanks so much for your support Graham, and really glad to hear about 350 Christchurch's upcoming campaign! We definitely need a coordinated effort for this election, and I love your framing of a "climate-active government". That's exactly what we need.

Let us know if we can support your campaign at all.

While corporations may have tried to twist the carbon footprint in their favour, the original ecological footprint has real merit. This first surfaced in three early 1990s. Analysis of data from national accounts feeds into Earth Overshoot Day projections. I like how they're open about the scientific rigor they take to their work. https://www.footprintnetwork.org/our-work/ecological-footprint/limitations-and-criticisms/

Thanks Stephen! I definitely agree that ecological footprints play a role in climate action - I tend to think the individual actions of reducing your own footprint can be a driver for getting involved in further systemic action as well, and as you said, it all adds up to our planetary overshoot projections. That's a great resource too, thank you for sharing!

Yes, I know. Thanks… that was helpful. The end date is September, and we would like some more publicity.

Here is another script:

Have you signed our Degrowth Aotearoa New Zealand (DANZ) petition yet asking for investigation of Tradable Energy Quotas (TEQS)? We have it on two sites.

So far the Parliament site has 496 signatories and Greenpeace has 72. Total 568.

This is a scheme where we ration fossil fuels and reduce the total rations every year. Businesses pay for their rations but people over driving age get theirs free. Rations are tradable.

If we want a reduction in fossil energy use and hence a reduction in material throughput TEQs will do it and people will adapt to a new way of living. The ETS isn't working because governments, aware of the cost-of-living issue, will be inclined to intervene to make sure the price of petrol doesn't rise (it interfered last December and then two ETS auctions failed)

Our high-energy lifestyle is costing the earth. We need big changes quickly. With TEQs, unlike ETS, everyone is involved and has the same goal – to plan their life and work to adapt to fewer rations next year. It is a sure way to reduce emissions.

Please go to the Greenpeace site which is our more recent one and has the potential to get more signatures.

Hallo again Dhanya ! This is an excellent article + CTA. My own substack (goes out again tonight) includes a fortnightly piece on the same kind of thinking as your own. The NeXt posting is on the challenges and oppositions facing potential activists. I would very much like to include a paragraph pointing to the work of your team. Are you OK with this ?

These regular emails focusing on action are really useful for me and for encouraging others.

On the individual action options, I wonder how much more impactful would no flights and no meat/dairy be?

Thanks Marty, really appreciate you saying that 🥰 It helps a lot with motivating us to keep going on this each week!

No flights (or even just taking one less flight), and cutting out meat & dairy (or even just reducing meat & dairy) are incredibly impactful - definitely top 10, and by quite a margin.
