Re: being a voice for climate at council meetings: any suggestions for an effective approach in a council where a majority believe climate change policy is an overreaction and some believe climate change to be a hoax? This triennium is looking to be a slog, need some fresh inspo 🥹😅
Hi Caren, great question - I know the feeling! 🫠 By and large, it's most efficient to be talking to the "persuadables" (people who know it's a crisis, and just need a nudge), but it's hard when most of the key decision makers in your area are still in the denial phase.
In any case, it's probably best to start with an issue that they can get on board with, rather than going straight in with climate change. E.g. "Isn't it frustrating how bad the traffic is?" or "I want clean rivers for me and my family to swim in." or "I want to be able to afford fruit & veg and to support our local farmers. But extreme weather events are making that difficult."
Also, patience is key - knowing that you're not going to change their mind overnight, but it'll be the relationship you build with these local representatives that slowly open them to new perspectives. Those slow changes tend to be deeper and more permanent, so it's well worth it!
The Workshop have this excellent resource on best practice for how to talk about climate change - highly recommend!
Wowsers- so good to see you get 2000 readers…. You deserve this sort of response as your work is always thoughtful, thought provoking and full of soul and humanity.💚 oh and imaginative! and thank you for the neat side article about writing a letter to the editor Dhanya 👏🏼👌🏻 gives me some ideas about giving that a shot!
Thanks so much Malcolm! I have been meaning to check in with CC QLD, sorry for the radio silence! I hope the team is going well, let’s catch up soon - thank you for all your consistent work in this area too 🥰
Congrats on the 2000 subscribers 🎉
Thanks Ryan! 💖🐕🌱
I hear you - I wasn't screaming into the void at the tax announcement, just feeling really sad and a bit hopeless.
But I'm picking myself up and just keeping going in my efforts to keep issues like climate change on politicians minds.
That's great news about you reaching 2000 subscribers though. That's a great milestone.
Thanks Melanie, appreciate you sharing how you felt too, and what you're doing in response 🥰 And yes, the 2000 really crept up on us!
