I know, it's so dreamy! 💛 Symonds Street also looks amazing through this view - it would have been so nice to walk through a uni that had a pedestrianised street.
I've been chatting with a few people about how to stay positive as waves of alarming news keeping crashing in. The idea we've struck on is to hold a monthly climate café. Our first one is tomorrow at the Courtyard in Raumati Beach, Kāpiti.
The idea comes from an international movement of cafés: people have been meeting since 2015 in dozens of cities to share ideas, support and guidance. It is a safe space that is welcoming and inclusive for everyone to talk and act on climate, and other intersecting challenges.
I'm looking forward to sense of solidarity more than anything, and I'm aiming to leave with nothing extra added to my to do list. I'll be sure to mention Climate Club - it's a weekly dose of hope.
Our first meetup won't break any attendance records, but it felt really good to connect with others. Lots of interest and those that attended are keen to meet again in early December. I'll be sure to post details, or contact me via sblyth@mailbox.org
My interest in setting this up stems from my experience of burnout after working on the cannabis referendum in 2020. I'm interested in seeing how people involved in change can set-up processes that help sustain social action. I'm attracted to the idea of community care. This is something I aim to write about on the not too distant future.
See Tammy Gan's article on Green is the new Black: Community care as a radical act: how to move in moments of powerlessness and burnout
I reckon time spent looking after ourselves is vital if we're to sustain our activism for the long term. I replied to Kevin on this thread about how it went - main thing is we got enough out of it that we decided to meet again. The only way I think we'll entice others along is by asking them directly, FB events & similar things doesn't cut through.
A great thought that Capitalism is comparable with the Divine Right of Kings. And equally defunct.
My five-minute suggestion? Sign the Plant-based Treaty: https://plantbasedtreaty.org/
Love it Annie! It's been very cool to see cities like Edinburgh sign on to this treaty
What a dream the city would be, if it were like that. And with native plants. 💚

It really would!

How did the climate cafe go? We're just down the coast in Porirua, it would be good to attend something like this

This is such a great idea Stephen! I've been wondering if it would be nice for Climate Club to hold something like this, let us know how it goes :)
I've also seen Extinction Rebellion holding climate cafe afternoons: https://extinctionrebellion.nz/event/weekly-climate-club-2/
